The beautiful tumbling down counting pegs box from Tag was impatiently waiting in my closet… it already showed up when Lynne started to shortly get interested in numbers. Then it went to hide a while. It is back now and I am very excited !
A beautiful wooden material to learn numbers through sense. Once again, hand is the tool of the brain…
- 10 pegs
- 10 boards numbered from 1 to 10, with holes on the left side and carved with the corresponding number on the right side
- a box with a knob to pull to make the pegs tumble down
Count while putting down the pegs, trace the number with fingers (should be 2 fingers, what you do not see on picture !), then make everything tumble down. I let her chose the board she wants. I name the numbers but I do not correct her.
Lynne can idiomatically count to 10 in order, but the association between number and quantity is confusing after 4. We read counting books, like the French one Balthazar and the brown rabbit and Lynne plays with foam numbers in bath. We are barely discovering the Montessori number box, but I will tell you about later…
